On Sausage Pond

Posted on September 23, 2006

Plant yourself at a table under a canopy of giant umbrellas in Zagreb’s Cvjetni Trg on a cool, sunny Saturday afternoon in late September and you’ll understand why sitting and drinking coffee for hours is the national pastime in Croatia. The coffee is strong, the conversation is light and the women are beautiful. Whiling away the hours on the square is unquestionably an exercise in ocular restraint.

But all of that sitting will likely arouse a pow’rful hunger deep inside you. The light pastries from the bakeries you’ll see every 20 meters in Zagreb just don’t cut it, and roasted corn is really just barbecued salad. Never fear, there is a kobasica kiosk on Cvjetni Trg with sausages of all sizes and spice levels waiting to be snatched up.

The dark, wolf-eyed Balkan beauty behind the sausage pond asked me which kind I wanted. I answered, “Yes.”
