The Boys Are Back In Town

Posted on June 22, 2006

Nikica is back in Kućište after six months at sea and he’s enjoying the downtime. Last night he fell from the rear of his stool and cracked his melon on the stone floor at the Karmela beach bar in Viganj. The sound of a human skull coming into contact with stone at full ramming speed is something you’ll take with you to the grave if you ever hear it. Horrid. Imagine the sound of a major league baseball player smacking a line drive out of the park, but deeper. And the crowd doesn’t cheer afterward.

A lovely young woman held a bar towel to the back of his head, held him and spoke softly into his ear. When he came to and the bleeding stopped, he downed six glasses of water, returned his ball cap to its proper place and got back on the stool. Within ten minutes he ordered another Jack Daniels. After another ten minutes, he was kissing the girl. Nikica reminds me of my friend Bill. I remember the night Bill fell from a second story patio at a party on Cornell and cracked his head on the cement years ago.

The Jugo winds were blowing from Africa this morning. I’m told that no one likes the hot, humid weather that results. In the old republic of Dubrovnik, crimes committed during Jugo were punished less severely. The weather was considered a mitigating circumstance. I’m from St. Louis, Missouri. These people don’t realize how pleasant the “heat and humidity” here actually are.

Sveta Jana comes to me in dreams.

    John,

I love your writing style! Wow, you truly have mastered the ablility to put sounds, smells and tastes into words that can be felt.

I stumbled onto your site through a posting on a newsgroup (alt.cooking-chat) and the next thing I knew - minutes became an hour.

Goddard? I lived in the St. Louis area back in the 80s and I want to say that the name was… popular (?)… no. Ah, familiar. Are you originally from that area or were you merely passing through? Curious mind here (but feel free to keep your privacy).

I rarely comment about sites I visit unless I find them grossly moving…. Your site is dude! I’m boled over by your skills! Did you take the photographs as well? They really seem to capture what you’ve described.

    I wish you continued success,
    Cyndi
