Festival Starih Zanata

What a surprise: Festival Starih Zanata (Festival of Old Trades) in Gornji Grad tonight! People were out and about of a Thursday even, enjoying the warm spring breeze. In Zagreb, the breeze smells like flow’rs and babies look like this:

He was watching the trams come up the hill to Kula Lotrščak - an acceptable pastime for someone his age. “Još malo, još malo…”
Copper stills! It’s perfectly legal to distill your own spirits in Croatia, and many people do. In fact, almost everywhere I’ve been, I’ve been offered homemade brandies (called rakija here) from plums, pears, apples, and just about anything else that can be distilled. These stills were for sale, but I didn’t buy them:

Check this hoary old fellow out below! I don’t know if he was a blacksmith or merely a fest-goer, but with such an affectionate regard for the anvil and dwarfish chin music such as he’s sporting, he deserves to be recognized as an honorary master blacksmith by the union:

There was plenty of music on hand, such as traditional tamburica from an enthusiastic ensemble of young local men. You can hear their fierce, romantic sound by punching this link with your fist: tamburica.mp3
